6 Inspirational Quotes On National Creativity Day

Today, May 30th, is National Creativity Day. If your speciality is digital, fiber, watercolor, or some other art, celebrate it extra today. There is no better day to surround yourself with all the things that inspire you and keep your creativity flowing.

“Creativity is a natural extension of our enthusiasm.”

Earl Nightingale / Radio entertainer, Author

Earl Nightingale’s quote is the epitome of excitement, joy, and passion that derives from artistic daydreaming and the physical making. For creatives, it is easy to form a connection to this short and sweet quote. There are reasons behind why each person is drawn to creating and the satisfaction that it brings. For me, I’m constantly thinking about what my next project will be, whether it relates to my blog, my creative writing, or other art outlets.

“Don’t think. Thinking is the enemy of creativity. It’s self-conscious and anything self-conscious is lousy. You can’t try to do things. You simply must do things.”

Ray Bradbury / Author

Maybe it’s a canvas, a piece of paper, or even a blank artboard on Adobe Illustrator. Staring, you try to think, respond strategically. In art, we sometimes must let go from the walls of limitation. We must go all out in Jackson Pollock style, wild, crazy, creating something eye-catching, and quite frankly, legendary. Too much thought can diminish what is truly possible. The less thinking that zooms through our minds, the less opportunity there is for third-person judgement and an impenetrable space for risk-taking.

“And by the way, everything in life is writeable about if you have the outgoing guts to do it and the imagination to improvise. The worst enemy to creativity is self-doubt.”

Sylvia Plath / Poet

Self-doubt and second-guessing just may be the top killer of stories never becoming published or emerging in a place further than a computer screen or crammed inside a desk drawer. Writers have a common habit of reconsidering their story, questioning its worth and how good of a plot it is. I know those concerns all too well. From the mundane to the extravagant, anything can inspire the written word and take the form of writing.

“For us, creativity means thinking about the lives of our audience and how to connect with them.”

Anna Wintour / Fashion editor

In fashion, the designer must understand their client, but this is true for writers too. We must have open communication with our audience. The creator and the consumer have to both feel satisfied with each project. This can be achieved without the designer, artist, or writer having to sacrifice their true self.

“The purpose of art is washing the dust of daily life off our souls.”

Pablo Picasso / Painter

Creating art is therapeutic and can make the dark of days or nights feel more bright. Art is healing and it gives the opportunity to cope with the thoughts that bump against our minds. Pablo Picasso’s Blue Period was all about helping him to cope and release his own emotions and feelings. The realities of life can be challenging, but art provides an escape. This escape can come in the form of paint, words, or pencil sketches.

“Every artist was first an amateur.”

Ralph Waldo Emerson / Poet

I like this quote a lot. It is a good, healthy reminder that all creatives begin on the same two feet. We all begin as amateurs before developing into skilled, advanced artists. Our paths may all look different, but the starting line is identical.
